Porcupine grass grows in dry prairies, especially on sand or in dune areas but also in gravelly soil. It grows best in uncrowded, sunny settings with low plants such as pussytoes and prairie smoke. It is not a vigorous competitor. It is fun to show off the inflorescence in early summer---the seeds have a long quill-like tail.
